Why Exfoliating is Good for Your Skin

Posted on May 21 2020

Exfoliating your skin is probably one of the most important steps in your skin care routine, but you may not know why. There's the obvious use of exfoliating which is to rid your skin of dead skin cells, but did you know that exfoliating your skin can actually help your other products perform better?

The other week I kept noticing that my legs were so dry and ashy. I started heavily hydrating my legs, but I was noticing that it just wasn't working as well as I know it can, like it has in the past. My legs would be hydrated temporarily, but then would be ashy again shorty after. Then it hit me! I hadn't exfoliated in weeks (ok fine, months)!  So much has been going on with COVID19, shut downs, and kids at home that my regular routines have stopped temporarily.

As soon as I exfoliated, I noticed a huge difference in how the moisturizer was working on my skin, so I continued to exfoliate every-other-day that week, applying the Body Butter right after.  My ashy legs went back to being smooth and hydrated in no time.

Why does this happen?

Well, dead skin acts as a barrier - this keeps your lotions on the surface of the skin and makes it unable to travel into those deeper skin layers. Your dead skin just keeps shedding, that those skin cells from the deeper layers aren't receiving moisture. By the time they come up to the surface it's too late - they are already dry!

We have several different types of scrubs here at Wildflower Beauty by Jessica. You may not know which is right for you, or which scrub is meant for different parts of the body so we have broken them down for you.

We'll break this down into 3 main categories: lips, face, & body.

LIPS

Our Lip Scrubs are the newest scrub addition to our all natural army of scrubs. You may wonder why you would even need a lip scrub? Well, do you ever find yourself reapplying lip balm more than a few times a day? Or do you find that your lips are looking extra flaky lately?

A lip scrub is just the thing to help with that! By exfoliating your lips, you allow for lip balms to better soak in and work so you aren't applying them as frequently. You will also rid yourself from pesky dry flakes. Plus, they smell & taste amazing! These lip scrubs are available in 3 different variations, Matcha Lemonade, Florida Citrus, & Lavender Coffee. Trust me, once you try them, you'll never go back

FACE

Face scrubs are essential to helping not only exfoliate the dead skin from your face, but to also help with clogged pores & breakouts. We have a few types of face scrubs available since everyone's needs may vary.  Sugar scrubs are the most popular because they're great for all skin types. They're gentle, yet effective! Each sugar scrub is made with specific skin issues in mind. Our Coffee Scrub is great for de-puffing & plumping up the skin. The Cranberrry Scrub is extremely hydrating, while the Spirulina Scrub is great for acne prone skin. The Matcha Sugar Scrub is the perfect balance of detoxifying & hydrating. Plus, it helps to brighten & rejuvenate the skin. Although these scrubs are made to do these other things, they all are wonderful at breaking down that dead skin barrier and removing dry skin cells.

The next type of face scrub that we offer is a salt scrub. Salt scrubs are amazing because they're exfoliating, but they also treat your skin to amazing minerals. However, if you have sensitive skin, you may want to steer clear of these since the salt may sting (just like the ocean). Our Renewal Salt Scrub has a ton of benefits including improving skin elasticity, promoting cellular turnover, & restoring fatty acids.

Our final face scrub type is a salt-sugar scrub hybrid. Our Cleansing Scrub which is a part of our anti-aging Spa Collection is such a unique product. It combines the benefits of both salt & sugar scrubs, plus it adds in grated soap for a cleansing aspect as well! If you're looking for a scrub to help restore your skin's youth, this is the one for you!

BODY

The last type of scrub I want to focus on is a body scrub. Like I mentioned earlier, exfoliating your body is essential for getting your moisturizers to hydrate properly. Of course all of our face scrubs are safe to use on your body as well, however we do have a couple of scrubs specifically made for your body. Our Coconut Lime Sugar Scrub is a part of our brand new Always Summer Collection. This scrub smells AMAZING! It focuses on restoring the natural glow that your skin possesses so your legs and arms are ready to be shown off in the summer heat! Our Lavender Chamomile Sugar Scrub helps to calm and repair skin, promote relaxation, and reduce inflammation.

                                 IMPORTANT DISCLAIMERS

  • All of these scrubs are important in their own way. However, remember to never exfoliate more than 2-3 times per week, because sadly there can be too much of a good thing.
  • NEVER exfoliate over open breakouts, cuts or sores.  Doing so can damage skin and also spread bacteria to other parts of the body. Stay away from acne spots, pimples or anything infected.  Exfoliating over blackheads/whiteheads is completely OK though!
  • Always listen to your skin.  Someone with very dry skin may only exfoliate once per week, yet someone who has oily skin, works out or has excessive sweat may want to 3x per week.  If you skin gets dry or sore you need to cut back.
  • ALWAYS moisturize after every exfoliation.  Although our scrubs have oils in them to help hydrate and restore skin, using a moisturizer like our Body Butter actually has a protective barrier in it to keep your skin safe, protect it from damage, and protect it from free radicals.
